Mobipocket

What is Mobipocket?

Mobipocket is an ebook format with the file extension .prc. It was created by a company based in France that started in 2000. The company was purchased by Amazon in 2005, and they used the Mobipocket technology to help create their Kindle software.

Mobipocket Reader

"Mobipocket Reader" is the program developed by the company for reading Mobipocket ebooks. It supports devices such as Windows PC, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Pocket PC, Symbian OS (some Nokia and Sony Ericsson models), Palm OS, and a few dedicated eReaders like the Cybook and iRex iLiad.

The DRM (digital rights management) system used by Mobipocket is quite different than others (like Adobe). For the first few years it used a "PID" which stood for Personal Identifier, a string of digits and letters. Each copy of Mobipocket Reader would have a specific PID, and you'd have to enter that before you would download your Mobipocket ebooks. Then you could use the same PID on your other devices. Later, they switched to a username and password system.
