Science Fiction

Definition of Science Fiction

From Wikipedia's Science Fiction page:

Science fiction (abbreviated SF or sci-fi) is a broad genre of fiction that often involves speculations based on current or future science or technology. Science fiction is found in books, art, television, movies, games, theater, and other media.

Science fiction often involves one or more of the following elements:

  • A setting in the future or in an alternative time line.

  • A setting in outer space or involving aliens or unknown civilizations.

  • The discovery or application of new scientific principles, such as time travel or psionics, or new technology, such as nanotechnology, faster-than-light travel or robots.

  • Political or social systems different from those of the known present or past.

Exploring the consequences of such differences is the traditional purpose of science fiction, making it a "literature of ideas".

Popular Science Fiction authors include:

  • Troy Denning
  • James Luceno
  • Larry Niven
  • David Feintuch
  • Isaac Asimov
  • Edgar Rice Burroughs
  • Walter Jon Williams
  • Mike Resnick
  • STEPHEN BAXTER
  • Ursula K. Le Guin
  • Orson Scott Card
  • Douglas Adams

  • Technology Musing

The fictional technology in science fiction often serves as a template for actual future science. In this manner, the sci-fi authors of the past shape the technology of the future. One classic example of this can be seen in the original Star Trek series. The characters on the show carried "communicators" that flipped open in the same manner as the widely used cell phones of today.
